CASE STUDY WEST DENVER PREPARATORY CHARTER SCHOOL
Customer Profile:  In August 2006, West Denver Preparatory Charter School began their first year for kids in grades 6-8 for the Southwest Denver communities.
Business Situation:  The new school needs a complete computer system design to academically support faculty and students.
Solutions:  BNC built and designed an IT solution which included network setup, hardware procurement and support for 11 faculty computers and 25 student lab computers.
End Result:  The customized solution utilizes the latest application platforms supporting structured academic curriculum for faculty and students. Continued IT support will allow the school to constantly make upgrades to expose students to the latest technology available.

The mission of West Denver Preparatory Charter School is to prepare students for educational excellence from middle school to college through demanding education of high standards, structure and accountability. The school’s rigorous curriculum focuses on academic basics while helping students benefit in the long run from longer hours, additional homework and a strict code of conduct.

BNC was contacted to design and implement a new IT solution supporting the vision of the school. The solution proposed implementation of a reliable network infrastructure for students and faculty to utilize throughout the school year. Faculty would receive new Dell Latitude laptops loaded with Windows XP Office 2003 Professional Academic Edition. These Laptops would also allow users to connect wirelessly to the Internet and server through a Virtual Private Network using a Wireless Access Point and T1 Router. A proposed Cisco Firewall would protect the network from Internet based attacks.

The student lab would accommodate one fourth of the student population featuring 25 work stations. BNC proposed Dell Dimension computers loaded with Windows XP Microsoft 2003 Student Teacher Edition. Work stations would be integrated with speakers and optics to minimize desktop footprint and system failure from abuse. Internet access would pass through an Iprism Internet Content Filter to prevent students from exposure to inappropriate material and control content to disable P2P type networks. The internet filter would log and report users in an Active Directory domain.

To allow for future growth for the school, a Dell Poweredge Server was proposed to accommodate more students and faculty as needed. The Windows domain Active Directory server is able to handle multiple applications to authenticate users, minimize administration by automating Symantec Antivirus updates and expedite workstation updates as needed. A dedicated Microsoft Exchange Server utilizing the same Dell technology, would allow faculty to sync locally or remotely with the server to send/receive e-mail, access personal and centralized contacts and view/schedule calendar functionality.

The school accepted the proposal with implementation to begin in late July to accommodate the school’s academic year. Partnering with BNC allows engineers to focus on the technological aspect of the school, while faculty focuses on the curriculum and students. Upon completion of the new solution, BNC implemented our real-time monitoring and alerting systems to help ensure reliability and quick response. Engineers continue to monitor and support the solution on an ongoing basis. We provide proactive technical support, training, maintenance and will strategically plan to continually utilize top technology applications to support the mission and values of West Denver Prep Charter School.
